건축역사 및 유산보존 연구실은 한국건축을 중심으로 동아시아 건축의 이론과 역사적 맥락을 연구한다. 이를 위해 아카이브 조사(archival research)를 기반으로 동아시아 건축을 상호 비교하는 데 그치지 않고, 서양건축과의 비교를 통해 그 기원과 특성을 보다 입체적으로 탐구하며 새로운 해석의 가능성을 찾아간다.

이러한 연구를 바탕으로 국제적 학술 담론 속에서 한국건축을 중심으로 동아시아 건축에 대한 논의를 확장하고자 한다. 아울러 본 연구실은 건축유산의 보존(preservation)에 머무르지 않고, 현대사회 속에서 그 가치를 새롭게 찾아 적극적으로 활용(adaptive reuse)하는 방안까지 함께 모색한다.

The Architecture History and Heritage Preservation Lab studies the theories and historical contexts of East Asian architecture, with a focus on Korean architecture. The lab is grounded in archival research. It not only compares East Asian architectural traditions with one another, but also places them in relation to Western architecture. Through this comparative perspective, the lab explores their origins and distinctive characteristics in a more multidimensional way. It also seeks new possibilities for interpretation.

Based on this research, the lab aims to expand international scholarly discourse on East Asian architecture, centered on Korean architecture. In addition, the lab is concerned not only with the preservation of architectural heritage, but also with identifying its new value in contemporary society. It further explores ways to put that heritage into active use through adaptive reuse.
